Lignum: The Nature Friendly E Bike

An Eco-Friendly Innovation in Bicycle Design

The Lignum electric bike combines sustainability and style

The Lignum electric bike, designed by Yunus Emre Pektas, is a groundbreaking innovation in the world of bicycles. Inspired by the need for eco-friendly transportation options, Pektas set out to create a bike that not only prioritizes sustainability but also offers a unique and stylish design.

The main body of the Lignum bike is made from CNC machined plywood and laser-cut aluminum. This choice of materials not only ensures a solid and durable structure but also minimizes the environmental impact of the production process. By using plywood, a natural and renewable material, Pektas has created a bike that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly.

What sets the Lignum bike apart from others is its departure from the common pipe structure found in traditional bicycles. Instead, Pektas focused on the flexibility, sustainability, and easy processing features of plywood. By combining plywood with aluminum parts, the Lignum bike achieves a solid body that can withstand the rigors of daily use.

The production of the Lignum bike is made easy and cost-efficient through the use of CNC machinery and laser cutting. This streamlined manufacturing process ensures that each bike is crafted with precision and attention to detail.

The Lignum bike is powered by a 300W motor, allowing users to travel up to a distance of approximately 75km. This motor provides support to cyclists, making it easier to navigate challenging terrains or simply giving them a boost when they get tired.

Not only does the Lignum bike offer a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation, but it also promotes a healthier lifestyle. By encouraging people to choose cycling over traditional modes of transportation, the Lignum bike contributes to reducing air pollution and improving overall well-being.

The Lignum bike project started in January 2015 in Ankara, Turkey, and was completed in May 2015. Throughout the design process, Pektas conducted extensive research to find the perfect materials for the bike. Ash wood was ultimately chosen for its durability and ability to withstand impacts and stresses during cycling.

The design of the Lignum bike presented several challenges, particularly in sourcing the right materials and ensuring weather resistance. However, these obstacles were overcome, resulting in a bike that is not only visually stunning but also built to withstand various weather conditions.

The Lignum bike has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Vehicle, Mobility, and Transportation Design category in 2017. This prestigious award acknowledges the bike's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving quality of life.

The Lignum electric bike is a testament to the possibilities of combining sustainability, innovation, and style. With its unique design and eco-friendly manufacturing process, it offers a compelling alternative for those seeking a greener and healthier mode of transportation.
